Can I take fiber same day as imodium without weakening bowels?
I know you are not suppose to take imodium and laxative in same day but isn't fiber different? I take imodium for ibs and don't want to be constipated next day (sorry if tmi).

  Angelique,

If you want to take them both, take them at different times as much as possible. Theres no real problem except the fiber could make the immodium ineffective if taken together.

Yes fiber is different than a laxative. Fibers main job is to keep the correct amount of water in the stool. Taking any two meds together is usually not a great idea. Take the fiber first thing in the morning with lots of water. then if you need the immodium later take a bit.

You might want to consider weaning off the immodium a bit. If you are using pills, try 1/2 and see if that helps. Once you get the fiber going, you really shouldnt have the runs.

A little more about fiber. People with colitis, ibs, and other bowel disorders found that taking soluble fiber is better than taking insoluble fiber. You can google the differences. Insoluble fiber like bran, can actually irritate the bowel, while soluble fiber is a big benefit.

The only over the counter soluble fiber im aware of is citrucel. An eating apple is also a good source of soluble fiber. I would avoid the insoluble like bran, metamucil etc. they can add to your problem.

So try one citrucel in the morning. Applesauce is also good. eat a couple of small portions a day.Whenever you eat, try to drink at least a half glass of water. This will keep the poo the right consistency and help your problem. Next I would look at what foods you eat help or make it worse.

Ive been diagnosed with every bowel condition known to man. The doctors weren't of much help. The little things i mentioned helped a lot.
immodium is good to have on hand for emergency no doubt, but you don't want to take it daily. You want things to improve naturally.

Good luck.

In general, medical studies of IBS during pregnancy recommend conservative treatment, including dietary changes, soluble fiber suplements, exercise, and biofeedback. Pregnancy seems just as likely to affect IBS for the better and not automatically for the worse. Your OB/GYN should be able to address all of your concerns.

Codeine is a category C drug. It can cause harm to the fetus. Research has suggested that there is a correlation between congenital defects and codeine use during pregnancy. i.e. ear, eye, cardiac, hypospadias, etc. Also, the infant becomes "addicted" and goes through "withdrawal" after birth. It is safe to breastfeed while on codeine.

In regards to Imodium sulfate; Imodium A-D has been proven safe for use during pregnancy. Check withyour Dr. on the daily dosing guide.

Taking any medication, whether prescription or over the counter, without need for it, can be very harmful. You need to see a doctor about your anxiety problem instead of (dangerously) treating the symptoms of it.

Is Imodium A-D bad for you?
Ok this is a gross question but me n my husband are having a disagreement. He's been sick all day with diarrhea and I told him to take some Imodium A-D but he says its bad for you cuz if you have diarrhea thats your body's way of telling you that you have something in your system that needs to come out right away and you shouldn't try to block it. So my ? is...how does it work and is it bad to take it?

Your husband is right about the diarrhea needing to come out right away, but if you are truly ill, you will go anyway despite the Imodium before the medication can have the chance to take effect. This medication slows the muscle contractions and spasms in the colon, not blocks you. I had the same problem as your husband last year, and I was still experiencing watery diarrhea for a few hours after taking Imodium because the infection need to come out.

Imodium works very well in stopping diarrhea, but it can cause constipation for a day or two...which will probably be the case for your husband anyway.

Since you said your hubby has been going all day, I would advise him to take 2 Imodium to prevent dehydration. The only bad thing that can happen with Imodium is if you take too much of it over time, gain a tolerance to it and it no longer helps the problem. It also causes some drowsiness, but your husband needs to rest anyway.

I hope he feels better!

What exactly does Imodium do in your system?
that makes diahrrea stop? For instance, I know Prilosec is a medication that stops the acids in your stomach from moving through and causing acid reflux. So what is it that Imodium does to your system to help?

When the intestines function normally, food and fluids pass from the stomach into the small intestine and then into the colon. Cells that line the small intestine absorb the nutrients and water the body needs. Sometimes the cells become irritated and cannot properly absorb the water and nutrients from the food. When this happens, food and fluids can move through the colon too quickly. This results in what we know as diarrhea.

Imodium works by helping restore your body's digestive rhythm to normal. Imodium controls diarrhea by giving your body more time to absorb water and nutrients, so you can get back to your regular self. This helps relieve the diarrhea, reduce the disruption to your life and shorten the bout.

How long is imodium (loperamide) good after the expiration date?
I am going on vacation tomorrow and the box of imodium that I have expired on 4/07. I know a lot of medicines are still good for a while after the expiration and I was wondering if anyone knew if this was still good.

Can you take imodium and lomotil for anti-biotic related diarea?
I recently went off antibiotics but the diarrhea refuses to stop. I've tried the brat diet but I'm still getting mucus filled diarrhea. I have lomotil from a diarrhea bout I had earlier in the year so I was wondering if that and imodium are safe to take with this sort of diarrhea.

How long does Imodium last in your body?
I was sick on Wednesday and went to the doctor. They gave me Imodium because everything was going straight through me. It stopped, but I was wondering how long the medicine lasts in your body because I'm afraid that if something needs to be released I really don't want to throw up! I figure I was having diarrhea for a reason, because something needs to get out, but I read somewhere online that it isn't always the case. I just don't want things to be exiting my body in even more unpleasant ways!!

Immodium only lasts a few hours. You can take it multiple times in one day if you have to.

Food only stays in the stomach for a couple hours normally, and once it exits to the intestines, it isn't going to come back up.

Is it okay for a Crohn's Disease patient to take one Imodium each morning, before school?
My daughter is in a severe flare, but she has insisted on returning to school. Though her teachers and fellow students have been completely accommodating of her frequent need to use the restroom, it would be great if she didn't have to worry about it, at least for a few hours. I know about the rare instance of toxic megacolon, but do you think it would be okay for her to take one Imodium in the morning, before she leaves home for the day? Thank you.

Hi there. I am 26 years old and have had Crohn's since I was 15, so I too have had to deal with being in school and the effects of Crohn's.

My specialist said it was okay for me to take an imodium each day, but everyone does differ, so make sure you double check with her specialist. Also make sure that while on imodium, she drinks plenty of water, to ensure she doesn't get "blocked up" from taking it.

I have even tried taking just half an imodium and that still helps. If you're very worried, perhaps start her out on half and see how it goes? You don't want her to stop going to the bathroom all together so a half a tablet may see her through her day and then she can take another half the next day.

Good luck with everything :)

Will diarrhea come back after taking imodium while having the stomach flu?
Had the stomach flu this week. Took an imodium Friday so I could go to work, and the diarrhea came back today. Is that normal?

You need to let the virus run it's course, that's it's way of exiting your system. But yes, that's normal. Hope you get well soon!

Is there another remedy for explosive diarreha if imodium ad is not working?
I've had extremely intense, explosive diarreha that started this morning when i got up for work... one colleague is out sick with it, another complains of my same ailments. It feels like a ton of pressure like gas building up inside you, it is explosive. I know it's not food cause we did not eat the same thing at any time and imodium ad is not working.

If the over-the-counter stuff isn't working, it's time to go see your family doctor. Chances are you have some sort of infection, not necessarily from something you ate. If it's a bacterial infection, then antibiotics should do the trick.

I have an ongoing diarrhea from last week. I tried Imodium and Lomotil?
Actually when it initially started I didn't cared though I took Imodium but continued drinking beer however since Monday I am on BRAT diet and have taken Lomotil 3 times since last five days but still I am passing very soft and irregular stools if not purely watery. I have no pain; nausea; vomiting or blood in stool. Any possible cures.
Thanks
But I am not drinking since Monday and strictly on BRAT diet

if this is going on you need to see a doctor if you have to pop imodium's daily/before you eat.

i would say give it 30 mins on an empty tummy, take the dosage on the bottle though.

i have lived through this all too well. i understand 100%.

i could not function without them. my medications were causing it and i also had a food allergy i was not aware of.

my doc was shocked because of my age & to hear a complaint from someone so young. so she asked me a lot of questions! turns out i am lactose intolerant and i also can't take greasy foods.

she put me on benefiber to help regulate my body, i called the people who make benefiber and they told me how to ease into taking it because it will rip you a new one if you have never had it before!!! something they forget to tell ya at the office....

i am now on benefiber full dose, i drink lactose free milk and i have cut back on dairy. i am no longer dependant on imodium and i have not had any for 2 years at least now. the benefiber is GREAT for your heart and body! my body was working too fast and was to irregular on it's own. this slowed it down and made me more normal. an added bonus is i no longer take motion sickness tablets because it has stopped since i have done all of this!! i now get to travel to the beach and i get to have a life.

it can get better with a doctor's help i promise!!! there is hope!

i hope you go. i hope you get the help i did, and i am one person who won't ever make fun of you! good luck!

oh by the way if you clog yourself up with imodium it will only cause more bad bacteria and the problem will just go around and around with no stop. you must let your body void. it's not fun. i went through this in my transition into benefiber, just hang in there please!!!

make sure you seek the medical help so you don't miss use any products, or of you have any worries your doc can help ya! i swear by this it changed my whole life!!!

send a note if you need anything else....

I have had diarrhea for 2.5 days w/ no fever or vomiting, what's wrong?
My diarrhea started around 8 pm on Sunday night, and I still have it. I get it like every few hours or so. My doctor said to not take any Imodium A-D. I really need to get well.
Should I try too eat something? And if so, what should I eat?

I know about imodium A.D. is there anything else that will help alleviate the symptoms with out a prescription. We are not apposed to the health food store or home remedies.

He really needs to be seen by a doctor. It could be he is allergic to what he is eating..Try to eliminate all dairy and see if that helps. Some develop allergies to Dairy as they get older. If that doesn't relieve it , it could be something more serious..Keep at him to see a doctor!
