What does haldol do in normal people?
If someone who didn't have psych issues took haldol, what would they experience?

What does haldol do to normal people?

Do people abuse haldol like other drugs?

Does the fact that haldol makes my bad thoughts go away mean that my mental illness is biologic, or does it relax everybody?

haloperidol is the classic example of "drugs are for sick people"..haldol is the wonder drug for people that have a loose screw, or a few cards short of a full deck.

for people that are well, haldol induces psychosis; two weeks or less of steady moderate dosing, of say 10mg, and a well person will start hearing things and have bad thoughts.

Haldol will also affect the well person physically; with stiffness, and parkinson-like symptoms,...these are generally called tardive diskynesia. another medication, cogentin, is usually given to counter these effects, to no avail.

if that stuff works for you, great; I've noticed how haldol seems to be more effective on women than on men.

your mental illness is biological, or organic, in that the brain is suffering a chemical imbalance, in simple terms....unfortunately, there is no simple solution for this problem. the benefits of haldol are usually outweighed by its contraindications..the side effects...

the family of drugs like haldol attempt to synthesize, or stimulate production of, these certain brain chemicals, which play a role in controlling emotions and moods.

once again, if it works for you, great.

If I quit cold turkey Haldol at 1mg a day, what would the withdrawals be like?
I've been taking 1mg of haldol everyday for 7 years. I also take Ritalin and Ativan. My doctor won't tell me how to quit haldol so I want to do it myself!! How do I do that?

Please don't do this. If you want to stop taking Haldol talk to your doctor that prescribed it. If you don't like taking the Haldol, maybe your doctor can prescribe something else. I hope you are doing OK. Take Care.

Has anybody taken Haldol for a long time and then quit it?
Has anybody successfully and comfortably tapered or quit Haldol or another antipsychotic? How did you do it? I take 1mg of Haldol per day and I really want to quit it!

Stopping medication is VERY dangerous. At one point I was taking 7 pills a day , and I quit them all cold turkey. I ended up in the mental hospital because of it.

The best advice I can give you, is to talk to your doctor about it. if you tell them that you will stop taking it cold turkey if they don't help you, they may be more willing to help.

How long does a Haldol injection last?
If a person was brought to a hospital in an agitated delirious state and they received a Haldol injection to calm them down, how long would it take the injection to start working? And how long would it last?

I'm not wondering about the Haldol shots that you get every 6 weeks to combat schizophrenia, but instead the kind of emergency shot that attempts to halt a psychotic episode.

There is considerable variation from patient to patient in the amount of medication required for treatment. As with all drugs used to treat schizophrenia, dosage should be individualized according to the needs and response of each patient. Dosage adjustments, either upward or downward, should be carried out as rapidly as practicable to achieve optimum therapeutic control.

Haldol administered intramuscularly in doses of 2 to 5 mg, is utilized for prompt control of the acutely agitated schizophrenic patient with moderately severe to very severe symptoms. Depending on the response of the patient, subsequent doses may be given, administered as often as every hour, although 4 to 8 hour intervals may be satisfactory.

The bioavailability is 100% and the very rapid onset of action is seen within about ten minutes. The duration of action is 3 to 6 hours. If haloperidol is given as a slow IV infusion, the onset of action is slowed, but the duration prolonged compared to IM injection.

God bless & take care as always.........

Have you told your doctor about this? You need to contact your doctor and tell him or her immediately and not quit on your own. No matter what medication you are on, never increase or decrease or quit a medication, always contact your doctor and they will let you know what to do so you will safely come off the medication without harmful withdrawal symptoms.

Haldol is a first generation anti- psychotic, I have always stopped 2nd generation antipsychotics and I never tapered off. They say it is dangerous to stop suddenly. So first take 1/2 the dose for say 2 weeks, then 1/4 for 3 weeks, then 1/8 for 1 week and that's it. There can be many devastating side effects from antipsychotics, and if you can control yourself perhaps you don't need the haldol. By the way they came out with 2nd generation antipsychotics because the 1st gen. were so dangerous. I stopped geodon this past november and only just now am getting it out of my system, of course I was on the highest dose for years.

I was given a single haldol injection for a panic attack, how long will I be experiencing side effects?
I checked myself into the ER because of a severe panic attack compounded by lack of sleep and some delusional thinking. I continued having a panic attack and delusions in the ER so they gave me a single Haldol injection. I experienced ataxia, sweating, increased sex drive, etc. Does anyone know the different types of Haldol injections?

Haldol blocks your dopamine, the chemical in the brain responsible for movement and pleasure. Don't check yourself into the ER, they will just inject you with Haldol, the cheapest and nastiest antipsychotic drug. If it was an intramuscular injection, it can last for up to a month, if it was an intravenous injection, then it shouldn't last for more than 3-6 hours. I'm guessing you were given an intramuscular injection, they usually don't give you an intravenous injection, unless you're a violent psychotic person on crystal meth or with schizophrenia. Google this drug, it's nasty. Weight gain, diabetes, an irreversible movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia, are all side effects. The mental health system uses drugs like Haldol to shut people down, for the sake of society, not for the sake of the patient. They could have easily given you an intravenous injection of a benzodiazepine, you definitely didn't need to be shut down with a powerful antipsychotic drug. Well, you've learn something new for next time.

Does anyone know how long the side effects of haldol last?
My grandpa got illegally dosed in a hospital, because it was 4 am and he had low blood sugar( a diabetic), and normally at home my grandma gets him something. They dosed him 3 times within 6 hours, and he's so loopy. Does anybody know how long for a 76 year old should last.
As a diabetic myself, it's really strenuous when your shaking and need something, but to be dosed with haldol to calm him down, only made him loopy.

Wow. I am sorry that that happened to your grandfather. You definitely need to get him checked out by another physician, Haldol should never be given to someone who is already in a confused state of mind, the fact that he's diabetic should have been noted in his chart and dealt with accordingly. This just totally pisses me off hon. Please bring this to the attention of the hospital administrator or to a patient care representative...believe me the hospital needs to be held accountable for this repulsive mistake. I hope that you are able to help your grandfather...Good luck!

Haldol and Pimozide?
Is there any body out there who has had personal experience with any of these two drugs? Or, do you know anyone directly that has been on them? I ask because I suffer from OCD, and I have tried four "new" anti-psychotics, and they have only been partly helpful. I am thinking about augmenting my Paroxetine with either Haldol or Pimozide, but I've heard that they are seldom chosen because of horrible side-effects and long term problems. If I'm given a script for Cogentin/Benzatropine, will that stop dystonias...etc? What can you tell me about these two medications and do you think they could be helpful? My mind is out of control, and this OCD has been going on for so long, its stale. I need to find something that works. Any answer will be appreciated. Thank You.

Ive never taken pimozide but i almost certain that it cant be taken with paroxetine. Im a bit like you, ive tried the new atypical antipsychotics and none of them did me any good the older typical ones work better for me. I have taken halodol and i hated it it make me agitatedfor about 3 hours and then id turn into a complete zombie. Ivw always said that if the house had gone on fire while i was on haldol i would have sat and burned i was so out of it. The old drug i found most useful was stelazine (Trifluoperazine). It really helped me. Its not widely prescribed though because in a tiny number of people its cause pseudoparkinsons which doesnt go even when the drug is stopped. It didnt do that to me or anyone i know whos taken it but it was a risk. After id been on it for a year the docotr alos put me on a low dose of kemadrin *anti parkinson drug) as a precaution. If you dont like the sound of that risk then you should probably try halodl first but if that doesnt work out then i would definitly recommend stelazine. I didnt experience any bad side affects with it at all.

Mellaril and Haldol (brand name of the generic haloperidol) are both powerful antipsychotics with a distinct sedative effect. Valium is a benzodiazapine typically prescribed for anxiety management - it, too, has a powerful sedating effect. The cogentin is given in conjunction with the anti-psychotics to prevent some very serious side effects.

The one drug that does not "fit" is the dexedrine - it is a stimulant. However, it is also sometimes used to treat ADD/ADHD.

The most likely case scenario for a drug cocktail of this sort is that the physicians at the time suspected that you had childhood schizophrenia.

Why does Ativan have to be administered separately from Benadryl and Haldol?
Does it have to do with the viscosity of Ativan?

A psychiatrist prescribed me stelazine, what is it going to do to me at 4 mg. each day?
Also, is it a risky drug to take? What is it used for? I was told it was an alternative to haldol, which made me start to have that awful side effect which I cannot pronounce. I believe this does not have as many complications?

Is it a crap drug, or should I take it?
